Mama, don't let your babies grow up to be journalists

Got a request for a list of the journalists that have lost or changed jobs due to the changes in media over the past year. Off the top of my head I came up with:

Reed
Ed Sperling to freelancing
Colleen Taylor to Financial Times
Joshua Israelsohn to consulting
Aimee Kalnoskas to Advantage Media and then to Consulting
Debra Bulkeley and Jessica Davis to temporary oblivion

CMP
Richard Goering to SCD Source
Greg Lupion to freelancing
Brian Fuller to "the darkside"
Steve Weitzner to Ziff Davis
Dave Bursky and Dylan McGrath to corporate and freelancing

Hearst
Electronic Products; Alix Paultre, to Advantage Media

Biz Press
Paul Barrett, from Business Week back to the WSJ
Rachel Konrad and May Wong from the AP to temporary oblivion

RTC Group
Ann Thryft back to freelancing

That's just in 2007, but that's not the telling feature. In the past decade, a little more than 90 percent of the publications I have worked with are now gone with nothing to replace them. Some of the players have shifted but most of them are either working in corporate settings, are doing freelance or have become PR reps.

And the latest trend... bloggers are getting laid off now. I know three novice journalists who only lasted a few weeks at some of the group blogs popping up.

Comments

  1. I'd add from the CMP ELG world, David Roman, Jackie Damian (copy desk), Cynthia Bolling (copy desk), Rob Keenan... the list will go on... soon, especially if '08 shapes up as lousy as it's forecast.

  2. Oh, and Mike Clendenin and Yoshiko Hara in Asia. A big blow for global coverage.

  3. FYI, Jessica Davis actually went immediately to eWeek.

  4. Jessica Davis is over at Ziff.

  5. Good to hear about Jessica. Could not find a thing about the change over.

And Keenan got a good landing spot, too. We're losing good people, but the encouraging thing is that good people find a place in this world. If anyone has heard from David Roman, let me know.

I'm old and you are not. That's good thing.
