EDN pulls the trigger
Mike Santarini and his boss, Maury Wright are the latest
Editor Rick Nelson of Test and Measurement will be the chief editor for both T&M and EDN now, taking Maury's place and Ann Mutschler, one of the survivors of the E News massacre last fall, will add EDA as one of her many beats. That includes distribution, solar, manufacturing, and cleaning up the office every other week (just kidding).
These are two really outstanding journalists, but since the industries they have covered continue to reduce advertising expenditures, it was to be expected. Mike covered EDA for the most part and EDA gives no support to the media. EE Times made this decision back in July. It was inevitable that it would happen at EDN.
Good grief - When will it end? The EDA community continues to lose its best and brightest. Do talent and experience - such as Michael has - mean so little? Is EDA even worthy of coverage anymore?

John,
ReplyDeleteEDA is getting the coverage according to their level of investment in the mechanism of communication. Most of the companies believe that their customers prefer getting their information from mediocre press releases found on Yahoo and Google searches. That's what they invest in.
Blimey, I didn't see that one coming.
ReplyDeleteThe best of luck to Mike and Maury.
I guess there won't be a Hacks and Flacks at DAC, just a Flacks and Flacks that will consist of marketing managers bitching about how nobody in publishing sits through their death-by-Powerpoint sessions anymore.
So much for the nice speeches Michael and Maury were asked to deliver at the EDAC/Reed event. Michael told the audience how much better EDN's coverage of EDA was than every other publication. By contractual agreement I cannot continue this piece with more factual observations on the matter, but my opinion should be obvious.

It is a shame for EDN to let go of such great journalists, it is their loss. I have no doubt Mike and Maury will show up shortly, just as Richard has and continues to support the EDA industry and provide in-depth coverage. As for the Hacks and Flacks meeting at DAC, which is now the Marketing Forum at DAC (name changed last year, reason is obvious as Chris mentioned ;) but this could lead to an interesting discussion for the need for new media ideas and techniques in the EDA industry, maybe reaching out past the traditional giants like EETimes and EDN to provide the information to our audience. Change is hard to accept but needed to move forward.
ReplyDeletegood luck Mike and Maury! hope to hear from you both soon.
