Blogging Birds of a Feather and a plucked chicken

I was not able to schedule my DAC time to attend the Birds of a Feather meeting of EDA bloggers, nor could I make the marketing panel on the use of new media.  I'm looking to JL Gray at CoolVerification to give me the lowdown on that, but he's already helped.  His post earlier this week on the event kinda told me what to expect.  First Rich Goldman of Synopsys, a fine fellow actually, is one of the panelists.  Synopsys recently fired its blogging guru, Ron Ploof as being unnecessary.  There is also Limor Fix from Intel, and the DAC chair, Monika Maeckle, VP of new Media at Business Wire and Rhonda McGee, director of research, at Reed Business.  Not a blogger in the bunch.  I can see Monika as having something to say because BW has a lot of interesting tools to measure new media ... though they are not cheap.  But I'm not sure what value the rest have.  I was thinking most of the panel belongs in the audience.  What is missing are the guys in the trenches, like JL, Harry the ASIC Guy and even Ron Ploof.

  1. Lou,

The marketing discussion today was mildly interesting but was really a case of the blind leading the blind followed by fury from the journalists in the audience that they're all being laid off. I didn't end up participating in the panel discussion itself but did make a couple of comments just before things wrapped up on a couple of issues. One, it is definitely possible to make money via blogs if what you're selling is something different than the writing itself (like, say, your expertise). I also mentioned that it is not necessary to be well known (or really, even an expert) to get started blogging. It is possible to become well known because of the blog.

To be honest, the more interesting discussion took place at the Birds of a Feather session Wednesday evening. We had around 45 attendees, slightly more based on my count than attended the Marketing forum.

BTW... you've made a small typo the first time you mentioned my name: JP->JL

  2. JL, JP, whatever. ;)

Got that fixed. I did enjoy your report on the BoF meeting and thought it really helped the virtual discussion. I also think the journalists tirade you intimated from the panel was probably justified. The actions that EDA marketers are taking right now are damaging the careers of journalists, probably irreparably. And they don't seem to understand that is damaging their own marketing efforts.

In the meantime, New Tech Press is getting some real momentum so I may be hiring a lot of these guys in the near term.

  3. Lou. The BoF session on Wed night was attended by the right mix of people: bloggers, traditional media, non-traditional media, CEOs, students, a lawyer and more. I'll try to blog my observations before the weekend is over.

Most instructive was the difference of opinions between the bloggers themselves. All of us have something to learn. It's just that some of us must learn the lessons sooner than others if we want to continue with our day jobs. And I'm not just referring to the media. Very interesting session....
