Jeremiah's self fulfilling prophesy

Anyone checking out Jeremiah Owyang's social media news digest?  It's pretty damn good.  A few weeks ago Jeremiah stated he thinks analysts are morphing into journalists as they have closer connections with the industry players and he's working hare to prove the point on his own blog.

Like IdaRose, I'm not sure it's true but reading Jeremiah's stuff is very educational.

Not to be catty (hell, blogs serve useful purposes), but one difference between analyst (or any other type of blogger) and journalist is that the former has no copy-editor, thus has an opening sentence that says "I know have confirmation" rather than "I now have confirmation." Yes, that's petty, and yes, as media companies get more hollowed out, they will have fewer copy editors and will resemble bloggers more and more, but there is indeed something to be said for an actual maintained infrastructure behind the word torrent. And one can still sense a certain shallowness behind TechCrunch, Engadget, Gizmodo, and analyst-news-blogs, as compared to true news sites.

  2. Agree with Loring. Copy editing - and appreciating the need for such - are a differentiator. That said, I would note that a few journalist (at least those with a technical background) have begun doing analysis.

  3. John, that goes back to Jeremiah's original posit: that through blogging analysts are becoming reporters and reporters are becoming analysts.

  4. Hi Lou. Well, through blogging, yes ... But I meant in a more substantial way, i.e., with access to hard numbers, doing the actual analysis based on those numbers, performing sponsored surveys of users and compiling results, even paying for industry recognized analysts for help. This is one enterprise that is beginning to show results for us (Chip Design), at any rate.
