A glimpse of the future?

Found out an interesting bit of trivia this morning. It costs more than $1000 a line per day to run a classified ad in a Tokyo newspaper.

  1. Lou, so why would anyone buy a classified ad in a Tokyo newspaper? Sounds like more evidence of what you've been pointing out: newspapers are in the latter stages of committing mass suicide.

  2. I took a look after your query, John. The Tokyo times had more than 1500 classified ads posted yesterday. That's pretty good income at $1,000 a line per day.

Not sure it would work here, though. There are some legal requirements for classified ads (legal notices, for example) but the cost is regulated. What newspapers may do is lobby to remove the regulation, allowing the market to set the price.

Eventually, someone is going to have to start charging for real information. The only thing free on the net will be canned corporate dreck. you get what you pay for.
